enjoy building computers, so I used this as an excuse to build a mini pc with consumer parts.<\/p><p>I originally built the system with an <strong>Intel i3 13100<\/strong>, <strong>48gb DDR5<\/strong> ram (<em>ballin<\/em>), <strong>2tb nvme<\/strong> (also <em>ballin<\/em>), <strong>500w<\/strong> psu, specific motherboard and cooler isn&#8217;t too important.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ue-card elementor-repeater-item-8dctk\"><div class=\"ue-slno\"> 2 <\/div><div class=\"ue-info\"><div class=\"ue-item-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aidengage.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2609_SCALED2-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Server Built!\"><\/div><div class=\"ue-item-wrap\"><h2 class=\"ue-title\">Server Built!<\/h2><p class=\"ue-subtitle\">6\/10\/24<\/p><div class=\"ue-description\"><p>I built the server, didn&#8217;t take too long I invited my friend <strong>Lucas<\/strong> over because he was also interested how this works. I was still waiting on some <strong>2.5&#8243; SSDs<\/strong> to arrive and was actively looking for an <strong>HBA card<\/strong> to install.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ue-card elementor-repeater-item-cxhsf\"><div class=\"ue-slno\"> 3 <\/div><div class=\"ue-info\"><div class=\"ue-item-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aidengage.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2608_scaled6-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Trying NixOS\"><\/div><div class=\"ue-item-wrap\"><h2 class=\"ue-title\">Trying NixOS<\/h2><p class=\"ue-subtitle\">6\/10\/24<\/p><div class=\"ue-description\"><p>More like I failed at <strong>NixOS<\/strong>.<\/p><p>For those who don&#8217;t know, <strong>NixOS<\/strong> is a <strong>declarative operating system<\/strong>, which means you edit a config file to manage the entire system. I tried this for a few weeks and it was like bashing my head against a brick wall that had thorns somehow growing out of it.<\/p><p>Really cool concept but god damn is it confusing and complicated.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ue-card elementor-repeater-item-i7rp0\"><div class=\"ue-slno\"> 4 <\/div><div class=\"ue-info\"><div class=\"ue-item-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aidengage.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2788_scaled_ssds-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Installing More SSDs\"><\/div><div class=\"ue-item-wrap\"><h2 class=\"ue-title\">Installing More SSDs<\/h2><p class=\"ue-subtitle\">7\/6\/24<\/p><div class=\"ue-description\"><p>This is when I realized I needed an <strong>HBA card<\/strong>, a PCIE card that allows me to connect more <strong>sata drives<\/strong>. In this photo I think I have a <strong>video card<\/strong> plugged in.<\/p><p>This is also about when I gave up with <strong>NixOS<\/strong> and decided to try <strong>TrueNAS Scale<\/strong>, which worked for a while and was able to install things like <strong>Tailscale<\/strong> and host <strong>MC<\/strong> servers. However, at some point, I swear this was totally random, my install borked itself and I did not have the expertise to troubleshoot that at the time.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ue-card elementor-repeater-item-go1n6\"><div class=\"ue-slno\"> 5 <\/div><div class=\"ue-info\"><div class=\"ue-item-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aidengage.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_2925_hba-768x576.jpeg\" alt=\"HBA Card Arrives!\"><\/div><div class=\"ue-item-wrap\"><h2 class=\"ue-title\">HBA Card Arrives!<\/h2><p class=\"ue-subtitle\">7\/22\/24<\/p><div class=\"ue-description\"><p>An <strong>HBA<\/strong> card (<strong>host bus adapter<\/strong>) allows me to connect more <strong>sata SSDs<\/strong> to my server. In the previous image there are <strong>two<\/strong> SSDs connected directly to the motherboard and that is the <strong>maximum<\/strong>. Now I have <strong>three<\/strong> connected through the <strong>HBA<\/strong> card.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ue-card elementor-repeater-item-0nptl\"><div class=\"ue-slno\"> 6 <\/div><div class=\"ue-info\"><div class=\"ue-item-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aidengage.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2914_scaled_prox-768x608.jpg\" alt=\"Setting up Proxmox and TrueNAS\"><\/div><div class=\"ue-item-wrap\"><h2 class=\"ue-title\">Setting up Proxmox and TrueNAS<\/h2><p class=\"ue-subtitle\">7\/26\/24<\/p><div class=\"ue-description\"><p>By this point, I had landed on installing <strong>Proxmox Virtual Environment<\/strong> and running <strong>TrueNAS Scale<\/strong> in a virtual machine incase my install decided to kill itself again.&nbsp;<\/p><p>So far been having good results with this combo pushing two years.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ue-card elementor-repeater-item-e05g2\"><div class=\"ue-slno\"> 7 <\/div><div class=\"ue-info\"><div class=\"ue-item-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aidengage.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2937_SCALED3-768x576.jpg\" alt=\"Setting up SMB\"><\/div><div class=\"ue-item-wrap\"><h2 class=\"ue-title\">Setting up SMB<\/h2><p class=\"ue-subtitle\">8\/1\/24<\/p><div class=\"ue-description\"><p>With <strong>TrueNAS <\/strong><strong>Scale<\/strong> running in a VM, I use that to host my <strong>SMB<\/strong> shares for both my cloud storage and also a few <strong>Proxmox<\/strong> discs. Here I built my server up enough to be able to connect remotely with <strong>Tailscale<\/strong> and mount the <strong>SMB<\/strong> drive to devices like my <strong>PC<\/strong> and <strong>Macbook<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"ue-card elementor-repeater-item-4bkkd\"><div class=\"ue-slno\"> 8 <\/div><div class=\"ue-info\"><div class=\"ue-item-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aidengage.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_4857_minecraft_scaled-768x868.jpg\" alt=\"House Minecraft Server\"><\/div><div class=\"ue-item-wrap\"><h2 class=\"ue-title\">House Minecraft Server<\/h2><p class=\"ue-subtitle\">9\/8\/24<\/p><div class=\"ue-description\"><p>I began hosting a Minecraft server for my fraternity Delta Upsilon which gained traction around the house. I decided to dive head first into Rust and Git, fighting with Rust&#8217;s borrow checker and compiler.<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"a06597d6 _26d811e2 f059b78b\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-testid=\"expandable-text-box\">I developed Carbon while also learning server setup and maintenance and a common tool is the command line tool wget. Wget takes a URL of a file and downloads directly from it, this works very well until the website has a redirect and that breaks the whole download. I have continued <strong>keystoning<\/strong> and <strong>terminating<\/strong> cables.<\/p><p>I will get a photo of the <strong>rear cable management<\/strong>, I spliced enough for the <strong>HP system<\/strong> to be pulled out all the way and <strong>stay connected<\/strong>.
